The possibility of Nigeria Air, the national carrier, commencing operations before the end of President Buhari's administration remains uncertain. The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, had previously assured Nigerians that the airline would start flying before May 29. However, aviation experts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of this promise.
The Nigeria Air project, launched in 2018, has faced numerous controversies and challenges. Criticism arose regarding the airline's branding, with concerns about the suitability of the logo and name. The government's lack of transparency regarding project details further raised doubts.
Although the Federal Government named Ethiopian Airlines Consortium as the preferred bidder for Nigeria Air in September 2022, the fate of the airline remains unclear. According to Minister Sirika, Ethiopian Airlines would hold 49% equity, while other consortiums would hold 46%.
Nigeria has been without a national carrier since the collapse of Nigeria Airways, despite multiple unsuccessful attempts to establish a new one. As the country awaits the inauguration of the new government, the prospects of Nigeria Air's operation remain uncertain.
