The Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA) has expressed concern over the decline of indigenous trucking businesses in Nigeria's maritime sector.
The President of COMTUA, Yinka Aroyehun, stated at a Presidential Task Team meeting in Lagos that multinational companies like Bollore and Medlock have taken over truck-owning businesses with large fleets, leading to unemployment for indigenous operators.
Aroyehun also raised concerns about the lack of investigation and prosecution for violent incidents in the industry and the high cost of doing business due to the influence of area boys on the roads.
He highlighted the need for protection for indigenous businesses, which have been taken over by multinationals.
The port corridor into Apapa and Tin Can Port is reportedly free of traffic due to a lack of cargoes, and truckers have sold their trucks.
