Telecom tax: Stakeholders project rise in call cost
The prices of calls, data, and SMS services could potentially increase following the signing into law of a five percent excise duty on telecommunication services by former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
Despite protests against this decision, Buhari included the provision in the Finance Act 2023, which he signed into law on May 28, 2023. Section 21 of the Principal Act was amended to introduce a new subsection (2), stipulating that all services, including telecommunication services, would be subject to excise duty.
