Shipowners, others kick over new levy

...

Recently, CMA CGM, a French shipping company, imposed a surcharge of $250 on overweight cargo destined for Nigeria from Asia and India East Coast.

The surcharge applies to dry containers with a container gross weight equal to or more than 18 tons and is effective from April 28, 2023.

However, stakeholders in Nigeria's maritime sector have rejected the surcharge, calling it unfair and calling for government intervention.

Aminu Umar, a shipowner and President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, criticized the weight limit of 18 tons, stating that TEUs are supposed to be up to 24 to 25 tons.

Nnadi Ugochukwu, a member of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, acknowledged that charging a little extra for overweight cargo is normal in shipping, but criticized CMA CGM's implementation of the surcharge.
