Rise of illegal maritime security outfits worrisome- Navy
The Nigerian Navy has expressed concern over the increasing number of illegal maritime security groups operating in the country.
Some of these groups are reportedly using Nigerian Navy uniforms or uniforms that resemble them to deceive and defraud the public, including conducting recruitment exercises and training.
Despite a proscription order banning such outfits, their activities continue, particularly in the South-south geopolitical zone.
The Navy has previously arrested and prosecuted members of these groups but warns that their proliferation could lead to a rise in maritime crime, with potentially grave impacts on national security.
The Navy has vowed to do everything possible to secure the maritime environment and protect lives and property while ensuring legitimate maritime commerce.
