On Monday, the House of Representatives questioned the Nigerian Communications Commission regarding the use of funds from the Universal Service Provision Fund and its expenditures.
The House had summoned regulators and operators in the telecommunications sector to discuss the poor coverage and spread of services in Nigeria. While the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, appeared before the House, others either sent representatives or failed to appear.
The ad hoc committee also summoned the Governing Board of the USPF, Accountant General of the Federation, Auditor General for the Federation, Federal Inland Revenue Service, telecommunication equipment vendors in Nigeria, and civil society organisations.
The committee grilled Dambatta on 1014 projects under the USPF, including an e-library project costing over N2bn. The lawmakers also questioned the NCC's request for N700bn to provide telecommunication coverage to 27 million Nigerians.
