Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL), a subsidiary of Oando Plc, has announced the delivery of electric mass transit buses for use in Lagos State.
In 2022, OCEL signed an agreement with the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority to establish an Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Ecosystem consisting of electric buses, charging stations, and supporting infrastructure towards creating a sustainable road transport system in the state.
OCEL partnered with Yutong, the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, to acquire the buses, charging stations, and spare parts required for effective operation. Adewale Tinubu, Chairman of OCEL, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in advancing Nigeria's energy future, and commended the Lagos State Government and LAMATA for their support.
This project marks a significant milestone for Yutong, as it is the company's first delivery of electric mass transit buses in Sub-Saharan Africa and the first step towards deploying an electric-powered public road transport system in Nigeria.
The Managing Director of Yutong West Africa, Frank Lee, expressed hope that the joint plans to advance Nigeria's transition to eco-friendly vehicles, including training programs for all stakeholders, would be successful.
