Nigeria, others need $7.5bn to deepen LPG usage – Refiners

...

According to the African Refiners and Distributors Association, switching from charcoal to clean cooking gas, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), in Nigeria and other African countries would require an investment of around $7.5 billion for infrastructure and stoves.

Despite having abundant gas reserves, Africa has the lowest per capita consumption of LPG, and stakeholders need to devise finance strategies to overcome the obstacles hindering the adoption of clean cooking gas.

The Executive Secretary of ARDA revealed that most African countries lack the necessary bulk handling facilities for LPG. However, LPG consumption in Africa has doubled since 2010, with Nigeria being the largest consumer, and LPG is the fastest growing petroleum product in sub-Saharan Africa.

David Appleton, the Vice President of LPG for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Argus, emphasized that clean cooking gas is vital to ensuring energy security on the continent.
