Oil and gas host communities in the Niger Delta are planning to file a lawsuit worth $1tn against oil companies and the Federal Government.
The communities aim to seek compensation for damages caused to their health, environment, and livelihoods by oil and gas exploration activities in the region.
The President of the Host Communities Network of Nigeria, Prince Barbs Pawuru, emphasized that the oil and gas sector is about cost and benefits, with the host communities bearing the cost while the oil companies and government reap the benefits.
He further alleged that offshore oil exploration is more attractive to multinationals due to the absence of monitoring, and crude oil theft and undocumented oil export are more prevalent offshore than onshore.
The communities are demanding an environmental, health, and livelihood audit of the Niger Delta and plan to sue the Federal Government and the oil companies for $1tn to repair their communities.
Oil-producing state governments are accused of neglecting the local government areas producing the oil while taking the 13% oil derivative fund.
