In an interview with the President of the Advertisers Association of Nigeria, Osamede Uwubanwmen, he discussed the recent court ruling that revoked the power of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to impose fines on broadcast stations. He explained that fines should only be imposed by the judiciary and that stakeholders may take legal action if dialogue fails.
Uwubanwmen also addressed the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria's (ARCON) recent announcement that it would need to be involved in advertising contracts, which advertisers under the Advertising Association of Nigeria have opposed. He said they plan to go to court for interpretation of the law, as ARCON's decision goes against the Nigerian constitution, which allows advertisers to handle legal contracts.
Regarding ARCON's ban on the use of foreign models by advertisers, Uwubanwmen questioned how they arrived at the N120bn savings figure and emphasized that Nigerian consumers are currently focused on Nigerian content. He added that using foreign models could harm a brand's reputation, and that Nigeria is already a leader in African entertainment, so it makes more sense to use local talent.
