Dr Olusegun Mimiko, the former Governor of Ondo State, has urged the Bola Tinubu/Kashim Shettima administration to focus on revitalizing the economy and lifting citizens out of poverty.
Mimiko made this call during the Change and Development Forum organized by the Dare Adeboye Foundation in Redemption Camp, Mowe, Ogun State. He emphasized that economic development is not just about implementing programs but investing in growing the economy and improving the quality of life for citizens.
Mimiko believes that development should be measured by factors such as literacy level, life expectancy, healthcare outcomes, and freedom to make choices. Regarding economic growth, he clarified that while it refers to an increase in real national income or output, it does not necessarily equate to economic development.
The benefits of economic growth may not always reach the people if it is only captured by a small percentage. As an example, he pointed out that Nigeria's five richest individuals have a combined wealth of approximately $29.9bn.
