Ignore telecom tax, Pantami tells firms
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has reaffirmed that the digital economy sector is exempted from the five per cent excise duty tax on telecom services.
This follows a leaked circular dated April 20, 2023, signed by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, which indicates that the Federal Government is planning to implement the tax.
However, Pantami stated that the sector's exclusion from the excise duty tax has been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari and published in the Official Gazette No. 88, Vol. 109 of May 11, 2022, and supersedes any other declaration.
The minister considers the tax to be unfair and a burden on consumers of the service.
