It appears that the Nigerian tax authority, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has introduced a new system for filing Value Added Tax (VAT) in Nigeria, which has caused difficulties for taxpayers.
The system requires the filing of an Excel sheet with a large amount of information, including the name and Tax Identification Number of customers, the amount of sales, and the nature of the transaction.
Some taxpayers have found this process difficult, and there have been concerns that the new system is counterproductive and puts an unnecessary burden on businesses.
Additionally, there are concerns that the system does not take into account the realities of doing business, such as the fact that competition may prevent businesses from passing on VAT costs to consumers.
The author suggests that the FIRS should simplify the system and allow normal VAT filing to continue as it used to be, with the additional information requested as optional.
The author also suggests that the FIRS should leave the role of requesting additional information to the tax offices, who can validate claims of sales and purchases.
