Eni, the Italian multinational energy company headquartered in Rome, has reiterated its commitment to decarbonization, emphasizing that its targets will be supported by solid investments. The company aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Eni's latest report for 2022 outlined its objectives and outcomes in the energy transition pathways for several African countries. The company highlighted its role in facilitating a just transition that ensures access to efficient and sustainable energy, while sharing the social and economic benefits of the journey to net zero emissions by 2050 with employees, suppliers, communities, and customers. Eni aims to achieve this with an inclusive and transparent approach.
Claudio Descalzi, the CEO of Eni, stated in the report that the company remains committed to promoting energy access, local development, and environmental protection while addressing the challenges in the energy sector. Descalzi emphasized that the success of Eni's strategy depends on collaboration with key stakeholders, including individuals, the public sector, international organizations, civil society associations, and research institutes. She stressed the importance of aligning common goals to reduce geographical disparities and promote global human progress.
Eni reported a 17% reduction in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions compared to 2018 levels. The company continues to implement measures to achieve net zero emissions in Scope 1 and 2 in the Upstream sector by 2030. This involves investing in emission-reduction technologies and developing low-carbon projects.
As part of their efforts, Eni launched the Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) facility for production from the Baleine field in Côte d'Ivoire in 2023. This marks the most significant discovery in the country and represents the first net-zero development for Scope 1 and 2 emissions in Africa.
