The Lagos State government has imposed a new charge of N4,600 on all imported vehicles leaving the ports in the state, known as the Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT).
The charge has caused tension among port users and vehicle importers who have vowed to resist it.
The Nigerian Ports Authority has linked TVT payment to the Terminal Delivery Order (TDO) and directed terminal operators not to release any vehicle without evidence of payment.
The Managing Director of the Lagos State Wharf Landing Fee Collection Authority stated that the new charge will check the use of unregistered vehicles for criminal purposes. However, clearing agents at the port have lamented that they are being overtaxed.
The Nigerian Shippers Council said it is not aware of the introduction of the charge and views it as a rumor until affected people come forward with complaints.
