Builders consider brick option as housing shortage worsens
Some experts are suggesting the use of brick building as a solution to Nigeria's housing crisis due to the high cost of building materials and weak economy.
Mud homes, which are constructed from soil materials like laterites or clay, are being touted as a sustainable alternative to concrete-based materials, and are pocket-friendly, eco-friendly, and have natural cooling effects.
However, the unavailability of clay bricks in the country has led to challenges in the short term, and there are concerns about their durability during the rainy season.
Experts suggest that for clay bricks to be widely adopted, there needs to be more investment in manufacturing processes and cheaper fuel to power production.
Poor government policies and their implementation have also been cited as hindrances to investment in the housing sector.
